Youth engagement

Our youth engagement initiatives are programmes that give young people the chance to learn first-hand about the workplace and their training options.

At present we run two UK-based youth engagement programmes: Apprentice Connect and our work experience programme.

Apprentice Connect is a chance for young people to speak directly to apprentices to learn about their experiences of taking an apprenticeship.

Our work experience programme gives young people an insight into the world of work through placements in a real workplace and open days.

Why do we engage 14-25 year-olds?

Our research shows us that young people are not always given enough information to make informed choices about training options and the first steps of their career paths.

To address this, we created youth engagement initiatives where young people can have their options clearly explained in a way that engages them.

It is our aim to empower, enable and encourage the next generation to make informed decisions.

Apprentice Connect

Apprentice Connect is a programme where current and former apprentices act as ambassadors and deliver sessions in schools, colleges and careers events to engage with young people.

Sessions take the form of workshops and assemblies, where the ambassador explains what apprenticeships entail and how they are a proven route to future careers.

  • Workshops are held for groups of 20-30 young people. They last for either one or two hours and are delivered by three to five ambassadors.
  • Assemblies can be held for full year-groups at schools and colleges as well as smaller groups. They usually last between 30 minutes and an hour.

Who are the Apprentice Connect ambassadors?

Our ambassadors are all current or qualified apprentices. They have experienced the benefits of apprenticeships first-hand, so are the perfect experts to share what they have learnt.

Our ambassadors represent the following organisations: NHS, DHL, Manpower, EE, Laing O’Rourke, New Horizons, eCourier, Eurocamp, the Wales Office, British Gas, Kettering Museum and Art Gallery and SPS Aerostructures.

How to become an apprenticeship ambassador

If you are, or have been, an apprentice and you would like to make a difference by sharing your experiences and advice with young people, contact our Youth Engagement Team on 020 7294 2494 or email ambassadors@cityandguilds.com

Ambassadors will need to be available to:

  • Attend up to three workshops, assemblies or events per year
  • Attend a full-day training session, to be trained on how to deliver workshops

How to book an ambassador session

Schools, colleges or event organisers that would like an apprenticeship ambassador session should contact our Youth Engagement Team on 020 7294 2494 or email ambassadors@cityandguilds.com

Work Experience

Our work experience programme is a mixture of work placements, open days and paid work placements or ‘internships’.

Work experience placements

We offer work experience placements in our businesses’ offices across the UK.

These placements give young people the opportunity to experience a real working environment. During the placement, a dedicated mentor will provide each young person with insights and guidance into the training they may need to turn their career aspirations into reality.

We offer work placements across a range of departments which include:

- HR
- Facilities
- IT
- Catering
- Finance
- Legal

- Corporate relations
- Sales
- Customer services
- Marketing
- Operations

Work experience open days

We regularly run one-day open days at the City & Guilds Group head office in London. This full-day session provides young people with an insight into the world of work and the types of skills and qualities that employers look for. The day also includes talks from employees who are in different stages of their careers – from apprentices to senior board directors.

Internships

Working in partnership with the charity Career Ready – which links schools and colleges to employers to create opportunities for young people – we can offer number of their students paid six-week placements over the summer.
