What is Future Proof?
The City & Guilds Group and Business in the Community, have come together to launch Future Proof, a campaign and online resource to help businesses break down the barriers young people face in their recruitment processes.
Future Proof will help businesses to make processes more inclusive, fair and transparent, and creating better first job opportunities for all young people, to help protect businesses’ reputations and futures.
Why is Future Proof needed?
Youth unemployment rates have remained stubbornly high – currently at 13.7% according to the Office of National Statistics, January 2016. That’s 2.5 times the rate of overall unemployment and totals some 848,000 young people. However, over the next decade 700,000 fewer 16 - 49 year olds will be in the workplace, meaning that young people will become a scarcer resource than they are today. If we do not make changes now, our businesses’ futures and our economy will be at risk.
Recently, the City & Guilds Group and Business in the Community (BITC) commissioned a survey of four thousand 18-24 year olds across the UK, asking about their experiences of getting into work. It turns out that one in three young people found the process of applying for jobs difficult. And of those who found it difficult, 44% ended up losing confidence. The most common barrier young people faced when trying to find employment was a lack of work experience – 57% reported having this problem. It’s a vicious cycle that’s been going on for years. No job without experience. No way to get experience without a job.
The BITC Employment & Skills Leadership Team has been focused on this issue for some time, and despite seeing improved economic performance, we continue to shine a light on the issues that stop young people from finding good quality jobs with progression opportunities.
At the City & Guilds Group, a core part of our purpose is about helping people into a job. That’s why we have partnered with Business in the Community (BITC), and backed a new campaign called Future Proof – which aims to make the UK the leading place for young people to work.
BITC has created the Youth Employment Framework, which includes tools and examples to help businesses inspire, hire and grow the best entry-level candidates. You can find this Framework and many interesting case studies on the Future Proof website.
